Week 5: A Changed World, and the Problem of Sin

The theology readings take a turn this week — from a good creation to a broken one. The story does something similar, moving from a season of settling into a moment of warning. Both threads are pointing toward the same reality: something has gone wrong, and it matters.

This week's readings:

- 30 Second Theology — "Has the world changed since God made it?" (Genesis 3:1–13) and "What is sin?" (1 John 5:6–20)

- The Greatest Story Ever Told — "3 Gifts" and "The Warning"

Day 1 — Has the World Changed Since God Made It?

Reading:30 Second Theology, "Has the world changed since God made it?" (Genesis 3:1–13)

The first sin doesn't just affect Adam and Eve, it changes the shape of the whole world. Trust breaks, shame enters, and the good creation starts to groan under something it wasn't made to carry.

Journal prompt: Where do I see the effects of a "changed" world most clearly in my own life right now?

Prayer: God, thank you for being honest with me about what went wrong in the world. Help me see brokenness clearly without losing hope in you.

Day 2 — What Is Sin?

Reading: 30 Second Theology, "What is sin?" (1 John 5:6–20)

Sin isn't just a list of bad actions, it's a break in relationship with God, a turning away from the life he offers.

Journal prompt: Is there a specific way I've been turning away from God lately that I need to name honestly?

Prayer: Lord, thank you for naming sin clearly instead of leaving me confused. I confess where I've turned from you, and I ask for your forgiveness.

Day 3 — 3 Gifts

Reading: The Greatest Story Ever Told, "3 Gifts"

Visitors arrive from far away, bringing gifts that mark this child as someone worth travelling for, worship offered before anyone fully understands who he is.

Journal prompt: What would it look like for me to offer God something valuable this week, before I fully understand what he's doing?

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for being worth seeking, even from far away. Help me bring you something real this week, my time, my attention, my trust.

Day 4 — The Warning

Reading: The Greatest Story Ever Told, "The Warning"

A warning comes, and the family responds with quick obedience rather than hesitation. Sometimes trusting God means acting fast on what he's made clear.

Journal prompt: Is there something God has already made clear to me that I've been slow to act on?

Prayer: God, thank you for warning and guiding your people. Give me the same readiness to obey quickly when you make something clear to me.

Day 5 — Integration

Reading: No new reading — look back over the week.

This week faced something hard: a broken world and the reality of sin, while the story showed people responding to God with worship and quick obedience, even amid danger.

Journal prompt: This week I read about how the world changed because of sin, and I watched people respond to God with worship and obedience anyway. What's one way I can respond to God like that this week, despite the brokenness around me?

Prayer: God, thank you for this week. Thank you for being honest with me about sin and for showing me what faithful response looks like. Help me carry that forward.
