Daily Bible Readings - Term 1 Week 10

Week 10: The Kingdom Begins

This week marks a turning point. The theology readings ask what happened as Jesus grew up and how he showed that God's kingdom had begun; the story shows him pushing past human limits and calling the first people to follow him.

This week's readings:

- 30 Second Theology — "What happened when Jesus grew up?" (Luke 3:1–22) and "How did Jesus show that God's kingdom had begun?" (Matthew 4:1–11)

- The Greatest Story Ever Told — "Human Limits" and "Come with Me"

Day 1 — What Happened When Jesus Grew Up?

Reading: 30 Second Theology, "What happened when Jesus grew up?" (Luke 3:1–22)

Jesus' baptism marks the start of his public ministry, the moment the Father names him "my beloved Son" before he's done anything publicly yet. His identity comes before his work.

Journal prompt: Do I tend to base my worth on what I've accomplished, or can I rest in being loved by God first, like Jesus was?

Prayer: God, thank you for naming Jesus your beloved Son before he'd done anything to prove it. Help me rest in being loved by you the same way.

Day 2 — How Did Jesus Show That God's Kingdom Had Begun?

Reading: 30 Second Theology, "How did Jesus show that God's kingdom had begun?" (Matthew 4:1–11)

Facing temptation in the wilderness, Jesus refuses shortcuts to power and stays faithful to God's way, showing that the kingdom he's bringing doesn't operate on the world's terms.

Journal prompt: Where am I tempted to take a shortcut this week instead of doing things God's way?

Prayer: Lord, thank you for refusing every shortcut for my sake. Give me strength to choose your way over the easy way today.

Day 3 — Human Limits

Reading: The Greatest Story Ever Told, "Human Limits"

Even Jesus experiences real limits, hunger, weariness, the constraints of a human body. His power doesn't erase his humanity.

Journal prompt: How does it change things to know that Jesus experienced real limits, the same kind I feel?

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for taking on real human limits. When I feel weak or tired this week, help me remember you understand.

Day 4 — Come with Me

Reading: The Greatest Story Ever Told, "Come with Me"

Jesus calls the first people to follow him, not the most qualified, just the willing. The invitation is simple, and it's personal.

Journal prompt: What would it look like for me to respond to Jesus' "come with me" as directly and quickly as the first disciples did?

Prayer: God, thank you for calling ordinary people to follow you. Thank you for calling me too. Help me respond with the same willingness this week.

Day 5 — Integration

Reading: No new reading — look back over the week.

This week showed the kingdom beginning, Jesus named as beloved, refusing shortcuts, facing real limits, and calling others to follow. It's the start of everything that comes next.

Journal prompt: This week I read about Jesus' identity and the start of his mission, and I watched him invite ordinary people to come with him. Where is he inviting me this week?

Prayer: God, thank you for this week. Thank you for the beginning of your kingdom and for the invitation to be part of it. Carry that into the week ahead.
