Year 8 - How to Talk About Jesus - Chapter 3

ree

Baby Steps to Fear-Less Faith

Have you ever felt like evangelism (talking about Jesus) is just for super-Christians with microphones, perfect answers, and capes that say “I survived Street Evangelism 2023”? If so, welcome! You’re in good company.

This week, Andy Bannister shares something incredibly freeing: you don’t need to be fearless to share your faith, but you can learn how to be a little less afraid. Not with guilt, not with cheesy slogans, and definitely not by shouting “Just do it!” while someone shoves a Bible into your hand.

Instead, Andy invites us to take small, practical steps, supported by Scripture, our Christian friends, and the One who holds the rope: Jesus.

Have you ever done something that totally terrified you, but also made you feel amazing afterwards? Like a rollercoaster? Performing on stage? Saying something brave?

This week’s chapter compares evangelism (talking about Jesus) to rock climbing: scary, exciting, and totally worth it.

Task:

  • Write about a time when you felt scared but did it anyway. What helped you push through?

Read Chapter 3.

Reading & Vocabulary Work

Answer the comprehension questions in your journal.

  1. What lesson did Andy learn from rock climbing that helped him think differently about evangelism?

  2. Why does he say motivational quotes or guilt-trips don’t really help us share our faith?

  3. What does Andy say is more important than being capable?

  4. How does he describe evangelism as being like a team sport?

Vocabulary Words:

  • Risk-averse

  • Camaraderie

  • Scary vs. fear

  • Availability

  • Gift

Write definitions for the words and select two words to write into a sentence.

History Spotlight: Team Evangelism in the Early Church

Andy quotes 1 Peter 3:14–16, a letter written to early Christians facing real danger under Emperor Nero, who famously persecuted believers in cruel ways.

But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.

Task:

  • Research: What did Nero do to Christians in Rome? You could start with this article.

  • Why was Peter’s advice “Do not fear” so bold and important at that time?

  • Create a poster or information page in your journal.

Dig Deeper:

  • Christianity grew from 120 people (Acts 1) to 31 million by AD 350.

  • Despite risk, fear, and persecution, people kept sharing.

Reflection:

  • What helped the early church stay bold?

  • What support do you have that they didn’t?

  • Make notes in your journal answering these questions.

Theology Focus: 1 Peter 3:14–16 & 1 Peter 4:10–11

“Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened. But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord.”“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others…”

Have you ever wondered where your gifts come from? Watch the Bible Project: Holy Spirit.

Reflection

Think about:

  1. What gifts has God given you? (e.g., kindness, listening, encouraging, speaking)

  2. Why does Peter tell us to answer with “gentleness and respect”?

  3. What happens when Christians use their gifts together as a team?

Activity:

Write a prayer asking God to help you use your gifts to speak about Jesus.

World Faiths Focus: How Do Other Religions Share Together?

Last week, you looked at how different religions share their faith. This week, we’ll explore how those communities support one another when doing it.

Choose one option and explore:

  • How do Muslims support one another in sharing their beliefs?

  • How do Sikhs work together as a faith community?

  • How does Buddhism or Judaism teach people to live their beliefs together?

Reflection:

  • What makes Christianity’s team-based mission unique?

  • How does your church or family help you feel supported?

In your journal, write one to two paragraphs about the option you chose. On the bottom half of the page, write or draw how you are supported.

Personal Challenge of the Week

Choose one:

  • Talk to a Christian friend about a time they shared their faith. Ask what helped them.

  • Ask someone to pray for you as you take a step this week.

  • Choose one small thing you can say or do to share your faith — then do it!
